Swing On The Spiral

I am an artist in stagnation. I hate to admit it but there it is. It isn't that I don't work at all. It's that I stop myself from really putting my work out there. I study and practice and get inspired by ideas. Ideas that really excite me that I would love to work on. Sometimes I start them, sometimes I just write them down, and sometimes I avoid the idea like the plague. As if this inspiration is somehow detrimental to me. Why? Fear. Of course. Fear. That completely illogical, soul sucking thought process that has somehow managed to dig a hole deep into my brain and claim the majority of my processes. I am done with that shit. Honestly, it's ridiculous and when you really break it down all you see are lies. It does not represent the person I want to be. But I am grateful for being here, right now, ready to face my fears. Keep going.

Scott Burdick and Susan Lyon

Earlier this year my friend and I visited the M Gallery of Fine Art to watch a demonstration by Susan Lyon and Scott Burdick. Susan and Scott were both down to earth and willing to part with so much useful information. It was such a gratifying experience. You can see some of the lovely evening in this video (The "Rock Stars" comment was delivered by my friend)!

Shortly after returning to Jacksonville, I downloaded Scott's Secrets of Drawing and Susan's Figure Drawing video lessons. I found the technical and introspective aspects of the videos absolutely inspiring. You get a sense that Scott and Susan empathize with what a lot of artist goes through and they are very upfront about it. I think the relatability of these videos make them stand out as more than a demonstration. I would highly recommend purchasing them! They are available here: http://www.scottburdick.com/

My friend and I started doing 3 hour portrait sessions. We've since taken a break but they were thoroughly enjoyable. I am hoping to jump back into portraits soon(maybe with oils!).

More Figure Studies

I do most of my studies at public figure drawing session. We mainly do shorter poses, which I really enjoy. However, I would like to spend some more time working on a detailed long pose. Fortunately, I think there will be an opportunity for a long pose soon!

Graphite Drawing of Emily

"Searching" graphite, 14x11

I still feel so new to traditional media and I'm sure I will continue to feel that way. It is a bit scary trying to learn so much at once but it is also very exciting! There are so many possibilities...
